Squarespace vs WordPress: Which Is Better for Your Small Business?

We've built on both — here's what we tell every client

This is the question we get asked more than anything else. And the answer isn't "it depends" — it's actually pretty clear once you know what you need.

We've built on both platforms. Here's what we tell every client.

Choose Squarespace If…

You want a beautiful, modern site without touching code. You're a local business, service provider, consultant, or creator. You need basic ecommerce under 500 products. You want everything in one place — hosting, domain, email, analytics. You value low maintenance over deep customization.

Squarespace is what we use for most of our client builds. We built Dead Rats NYC — a streetwear brand with a gallery, ecommerce, QR-code lead generation, and print-on-demand — entirely on Squarespace. It handles merch sales, street marketing via QR codes, and looks exactly how the brand wants it to look.

Monthly cost: $16–$65/month depending on your plan. Ecommerce plans start at $33/month.

Choose WordPress If…

You need deep customization like membership portals, complex forms, or custom integrations. You're planning to scale to thousands of pages or products. You have or plan to hire a developer for ongoing maintenance. You need specific plugins that only exist in the WordPress ecosystem. You want full control over your hosting environment.

WordPress gives you more power, but that power comes with responsibility. You're managing updates, security patches, plugin conflicts, and hosting. For businesses that need it, it's worth it. For most small businesses, it's overkill.

Monthly cost: $4–$70/month for hosting, plus $0–$200/year for premium plugins and themes.

What About Wix?

Wix sits between the two. It's easier than WordPress but less polished than Squarespace. Good for simple sites, but the free plan puts Wix branding on your site, which looks unprofessional. If you're serious about your business, we generally steer clients toward Squarespace or WordPress instead.

The Real Question

The platform matters less than the execution. A well-built Squarespace site will outperform a poorly-built WordPress site every single time. What matters is: does your site clearly communicate what you do, show up in search results, and make it easy for customers to contact you or buy from you?

That's what we focus on for every build, regardless of platform.
