How to Self-Publish a Children's Book on Amazon KDP (Our Full Process)
The complete build log behind Finicky Filbert — from illustrations to live listing
We published a children's book on Amazon. Not a website, not an ecommerce store — an actual illustrated children's book available for purchase on the world's largest bookstore.
This build log covers the entire process behind Finicky Filbert, from concept to live Amazon listing.
Why a Children's Book?
This project started as an experiment. We wanted to test whether our AI-assisted workflow could extend beyond websites and ecommerce into physical products. Children's books felt like the right challenge — they require illustrations, text layout, print formatting, and distribution, all of which have traditionally required multiple specialists.
The question was simple: can a lean team with AI tools produce a quality children's book and get it listed on Amazon KDP without a traditional publisher? The answer is yes.
The Concept and Story
Finicky Filbert is a children's story about a picky eater who discovers new foods through adventure. The target age range is 3–7, and the narrative is designed to be read aloud by parents. We kept the text simple, the vocabulary age-appropriate, and the story arc short enough for a bedtime read.
The story went through multiple drafts. AI generated initial story concepts and dialogue options, but the final narrative was shaped by human editing. Children's books live and die on rhythm and pacing — how the words feel when read aloud. That's something AI still doesn't nail, so every line was read out loud and refined by ear.
The Illustrations
This was the most intensive part of the project. We used AI image generation tools to create illustration concepts, then refined and edited them for consistency. Every character needed to look the same across every page. Colors needed to be cohesive. The style needed to feel warm, inviting, and appropriate for young readers.
AI gave us a massive head start on illustration — what might take a traditional illustrator weeks of sketching, we accomplished in days. But the refinement process was still hands-on. We adjusted compositions, fixed inconsistencies, and made sure every spread worked as a visual narrative.
Print Formatting for KDP
Amazon KDP has specific requirements for children's books — trim sizes, bleed areas, resolution minimums, color profiles. We formatted the book as a paperback with full-color interior pages at the standard 8.5 x 8.5 inch trim size.
The cover required separate formatting with spine width calculated based on page count. KDP's cover calculator helps with the math, but the design still needs to look professional and pop in thumbnail view on Amazon search results.
We used PDF export with embedded fonts and CMYK color profiles for print accuracy. This is where attention to detail matters — colors that look great on screen can look muddy in print if you don't handle the color conversion properly.
The Amazon Listing
Getting the book listed on KDP involved writing the book description (optimized for Amazon search), selecting categories and age ranges, setting pricing (balancing margin with market expectations for children's books), and choosing distribution options.
Keywords in the listing are crucial. Parents searching for children's books about picky eating, trying new foods, or adventure stories for toddlers need to find this book. We optimized the listing with relevant keywords without stuffing.
What We Learned
Self-publishing a children's book is more accessible than most people realize, but the details matter more than you'd expect. Print formatting is unforgiving — one wrong margin setting and your text gets cut off. Color management between screen and print requires real attention. And Amazon's category system is deep — placing your book in the right subcategory can mean the difference between visibility and invisibility.
AI accelerated every phase of this project, but it didn't replace the human judgment needed for story pacing, illustration consistency, and print production quality.
The Result
Finicky Filbert is a live Amazon listing, available for purchase as a full-color paperback children's book. The entire project — from concept through live listing — was completed by a lean team using AI-assisted workflows.
This proved that our process extends beyond digital products. If you have a book concept, a product idea, or any creative project that needs to go from idea to market, the same workflow that builds websites in a day can publish books on Amazon.
